Portable Rock Direct Shear Apparatus
Main Purpose and Features,
The Portable Rock Direct Shear Apparatus (a multi-functional portable testing instrument for rock and soil mechanics) is primarily used for testing the mechanical properties of rocks and soils. By replacing various fixtures, it can perform the following tests:
Rock deformation test (see 4.1)
Rock compressive strength test
Rock tensile strength test
Rock point load strength test (capable of testing compressive and tensile strengths of core samples with various diameters and irregular samples from domestic drilling rigs. It can test compressive strengths as low as 5 MPa (soft rock) and up to any strength for hard rocks)
Direct shear test on intact rock (suitable for core samples with small to medium diameters and rectangular columns with a cross-section of 5cm x 5cm)
Direct shear test on rock joints and weak rocks (suitable for irregular samples that are difficult to process)
Direct shear test on soil (directly tests the shear index of soil samples from drilling, with shear areas larger than the ring knife area)
Direct shear test on natural or saturated gravel soil (for sandy gravel soil with gravel particle size ≤ 2.0cm)
This instrument is characterized by its reasonable design, compact structure, fine processing, small size, lightweight, detachable packaging for easy transportation, easy installation on-site, simple operation, quick testing, convenient maintenance, and low cost. It is widely used by engineering geological survey teams, testing teams, universities, and research institutes for field tests.

Completion of Test Items
Uniaxial Compression Deformation Test
This test uses only the vertical loading frame. Screw the spherical pressure plate into the internal thread of the piston in the oil cylinder. Install the lower pressure plate (Φ100×155) onto the workbench of the vertical loading frame. Place the rock sample at the center of the lower pressure plate. Install the longitudinal and transverse measuring dial indicators as required by the standard. Operate the manual pump to load the sample, follow the standard loading steps, record the measurement results, and calculate the test results according to the standard.
Uniaxial Compressive Strength Test
This test is similar to the "Uniaxial Compression Test," using only the vertical loading frame. Screw the spherical pressure plate into the internal thread of the piston in the oil cylinder. Install the lower pressure plate (Φ100×155) onto the workbench of the vertical loading frame. Place the rock sample at the center of the lower pressure plate. The difference is that the dial indicator is not required. Operate the manual pump to load the sample until it fails, and calculate the compressive strength according to the standard.
Tensile Strength Test (Splitting Method)
This test is similar to the "Uniaxial Compression Test," using only the vertical loading frame. Screw the spherical pressure plate into the internal thread of the piston in the oil cylinder. Install the lower pressure plate (Φ100×155) onto the workbench of the vertical loading frame. Place the rock sample and spacers at the center of the lower pressure plate as required by the standard. Operate the manual pump to load the sample until it fails, and calculate the tensile strength according to the standard.
4.4 Direct Shear Strength Test (Lateral Push Method)
Direct shear strength test on intact rock: Install the horizontal loading frame into the vertical loading frame. Install the shear frame into the test space between the two loading frames. Choose transition sleeves and pressure blocks of different sizes according to the sample size. After installation, install the sliding guide rail onto the upper pressure block. Then, perform loading according to the test standard and record the test results.
Direct shear strength test on rock joints, weak rocks, and gravel soil: Install the horizontal loading frame into the vertical loading frame. Install the shear frame into the test space between the two loading frames. Press the upper pressure plate onto the sample. After installation, install the sliding guide rail onto the upper pressure block. Then, perform loading according to the test standard and record the test results.
Point Load Strength Test
Install the upper and lower point heads onto the piston end surface and workbench of the vertical loading frame, respectively. Operate the loading manual pump to lower the piston to a suitable position. Place the sample between the upper and lower point heads, and operate the loading manual pump until the sample fails. Record the test data and calculate the test results.
